June/July is normally the time of year when many fortunate Australian holidaymakers pack up their suitcases, and jetset off overseas in search of a European summer. And while an overseas trip is not on the cards for the foreseeable future month, we’re hopeful that instead there’ll be a resurgence of our much loved, Aussie road-trips.

At PLAY Travel, we’re thinking ahead and working with our local travel industry to plan some great holidays for when we can all hit the road again!

Pacific Coast – NSW to QLD

The Pacific Coast Drive follows over 900km of coastline from Sydney through the surf spots of the Central Coast, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Ballina and Byron before hitting the hinterland of the Gold Coast and arriving in Brisbane city.  One of the most popular drives in the country, the Pacific Coast serves up everything you could want on a car trip — beautiful views, stunning beaches to explore, plenty of quaint towns with cool shops and restaurants, and a multitude of spots to take in breathtaking sunsets. Along this drive explore the famed wineries of the Hunter Valley, the beautiful white beaches and dolphins in of Nelson Bay and the surf beaches and cool cafes of Byron and Ballina.

Darwin to Litchfield (via Katherine and Kakadu) Return, Northern Territory

Take in the natural wonders of the Top End at every turn on this epic journey travelling from Kakadu to Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Those who love adventure will revel in this road trip to natural swimming waterholes and bush walks for all fitness levels. 

Start your journey in Darwin (the Territory’s tropical capital) and take the Arnhem Highway to reach the wonders inside Kakadu National Park. Cruise wetlands filled with lily pads and bird life; spot sun baking crocodiles along the banks of the rivers and explore ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries at Ubirr and Burrungkuy (Nourlangie).

Cairns to Cape Tribulation, Queensland

This northern, tropical part of Australia will have you thinking you are in Asia, with the warm year-round climate, white sand and palm trees. It’s a spectacular coastline which should be enjoyed slowly to allow you to explore the Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest on day trips, along the way.  Spend a couple of days in  Cairns to explore this vibrant city and visit Fitzroy Island for a day of snorkelling and water sports, before heading north to tropical Palm Cove.  Here you can enjoy another couple of days exploring the Reef and Wildlife Habitat. Then travel north to explore the Daintree Rainforest before moving onto the beautiful beaches of Cape Tribulation.

Brisbane to Cairns, Queensland

Great Ocean Road Drive

The great thing about road tripping on the Great Ocean is that is stills feels untouched. That’s probably because of its expansive landscape that invites you to savour the 243km of winding road. Weave through rugged coastal scenery, national parks, deserted beaches and quaint townships and marvel at the wild and windswept Southern Ocean.

The Great Ocean Road begins a 90-minute drive from Melbourne’s city centre. It spans 400 kilometres from the town of Torquay to Nelson on the South Australian border.

Uncover some of Australia’s best wineries, most breathtaking beaches and jaw-dropping geological marvels. Not to mention the Coonawarra wine region, the Naracoorte Caves and the wildlife of Kangaroo Island.
